COLONIC
Also called colon hydrotherapy, colonic irrigation, and colon cleansing.
A colonic is the infusion of water into the rectum by a colon therapist to cleanse and flush out the colon.
Things not to do:
Do not eat 90 minutes - 2 hours before a colonic, this can create gas.
Do not eat roughage, like uncooked leafy vegetables afterwards, this can cause gas and cramping.
Obviously stay away from greasy foods as well as roughage for about 24 hours after a colonic.
What to expect:
Complete a health history form and consultation with the colon technician.
The client is asked to change into a gown and lie face up on a treatment table.
You may not go to the bathroom 24 hours after your session.
There are different manufacturers, but 2 types of systems. One is an open system, the other is a closed system.
In a closed system, the colon therapist inserts a disposable speculum into the anus. The speculum is connected to a long disposable plastic hose connected to the colon hydrotherapy unit.
The therapist operates the machine on a closed system.
On a open system, the client controls the machine.
Warm, filtered water is slowly released into the colon. The water causes the muscles of the colon to contract, called peristalsis.
Peristalsis is the movement a colon makes when pushing the waste through the colon out through the hose to be disposed in a closed waste system.
No one can usually smell the waste. Although it can be seen through a clear hose.
There may or may not be some discomfort in the abdomen during the therapy.
During my 1st several sessions I used to get sick and cramp a little bit. Some people relax deeply during a session and never feel pain or discomfort. I never have, but over the years I have had clients who actually fall asleep during the session.
The colon therapist may apply light massage to the client's abdominal area to help break up feces and facilitate the process.
After the session, the therapist leaves the room, and the client may sit on a toilet to pass any residual water and stools. A typical session lasts 35 minutes to one hour.
