Giving Your Body The Break It Deserves...
MASSAGE EMOTIONAL RELEASE
Emotional release sometimes occurs during a massage session. A receiver or client‘s body may have unexpressed emotions that are held and come to the surface.
It can show in forms of tears, fear, grief or feelings of anger.
Releasing these unexpressed emotions can be an important step in a physical or psychological healing process.
Although a massage therapist is considerate and a good listener, during this time it is out of our scope of practice, especially for deep emotional problems.
I guess you can think of it as having physical memories.
I have had the experience of people getting emotional because we were talking. They were free to confide in me because we had built a relationship over time together.
I had one client, who is a counselor, cry during a session. It was only because of a loss of something that truly was only there in her mind.
When something emotional happens during a session, I patiently allow client to get it together or be calm in their own time. If necessary I suggest they do breathing exercises to relax more and regain control emotionally.
I just try to be as supportive as possible.
